What You Should Learn Concerning Child Behavior Modification

Behavior in general terms can be described as a set pattern of response towards completely different environments. Though these responses are generally learnt from adults, these may be faulty due to positive reinforcements provided by grown ups unconsciously. When parents are looking forward to the techniques of child behavior modification they should understand the causes of some set behavioral patterns.

The very first thing they need to understand is that behavior is learnt by way of observation and experience. Kids who are in the age group of 2 to 5 begin copying the adult behavioral patterns. To fully understand this phenomenon in general terms we just have to be watchful about how a young girl would attempt to put her mom's lipstick or a younger boy would roam about in his dad's shoes. Other than these little behavioral patterns, there are a lot of other subtle behavior patterns that the children adopt from their parents like the way they speak, aggressive behavior patterns etc. Which from time to time are unwanted. These if not corrected may later on cause behavioral issues.

Most of the times the parents resort to punishing the kid as a tool for child behavior modification, they fail to realize that this isn't needed if they can rectify the undesirable behavior of the kid in its early stages.

To modify set behavior patterns the parents first and foremost need to fully understand the difference between reacting to the condition and being proactive to the condition and learn how to discipline your child effectively. Reaction to the situation may include feelings of anger in the form of verbal sarcasm and hitting the child or even punishing the kid which might be too aggressive at that moment. This sort of a reaction could actually leave a scar on the kid's mind forever. Being proactive to the situation will mean disapproving the child's habits and helping him understand as to why it has been disapproved.

One other option to modify child behavior problems is the technique of reward and punishment which may be very helpful in changing the child's behavior if used in the correct way. When the child tries to correct his behavior he must be given a positive reward which may be in the form of appreciation, a little present or perhaps a pat on the back. This sends the message to the child that a specific behavior is acceptable. While the unwanted behavior may be ignored, verbally not approved or maybe a little scolding would have the impact but this should follow right away after the undesirable behavior. This would make the child understand that that very behavioral pattern isn't acceptable of him.

The dad and mom should also learn to distinguish between the kid and his unwanted behavior pattern. While disapproving the undesirable behavior the dad and mom must be very careful that they don't convey either verbally or in action that they do not love the kid. This could really damage the kid's self-esteem and instead of improving it will probably make the little kid stubborn. Once the parents are able to smoothly communicate the disapproval of the behavior and their love for the little kid, they will be able to quickly complete the task of child behavior modification.
