Bad Breath Detector: Are They Valuable Tools?

I repeatedly get correspondence from readers asking me if bad breath detectors truly work. They want to know my opinion of them.

First off, you might be wondering what a bad breath detector is - and what it does.

I have seen a number of bad breath detectors, the majority of which are hand held devices that you simply breathe into so that they can evaluate your breath odor. Then usually come with some sort of a light display that indicate the amount of breath odor measured.

You will probably notice, depending on your model --- you will, customarily, get distinct colored lights that purport different levels of odor on the breath. Obviously a red light indicates BAD - a green light suggests GOOD, and there might likely even be yellow and orange lights representing borderline types of odor on the breath.

How is it they can do this? I couldn't tell you. Unless you are a chemical engineer, you probably don't really care how they work. Your only concern is that they actually work.

How much do they cost? Generally roughly speaking $20. Those are the normal ones. Some of the fancier models may cost near $60, but by and large those may also be used to measure the alcohol level on the breath.

Should I fork over the $20?

I guess that depends. If $20 doesn't hurt your budget, and you are a gadget lover - grab one. Why not?

Then again, you can simply check your own breath at no charge by breathing onto the the back of either hand and checking the scent by sniffing in. Another way is to sniff your wrist after you lightly lick it.

Just these two easy tests will indicate if your breath is bad. The first one is for general bad breath, the second of the tests is particularly designed to let you know if your saliva is causing bad breath.

Very essential, in my thinking, is to estimate the preventative steps you are taking to stop foul breath. You must understand your simple bad breath cause.

Though you may not hard heard this, most commercial mouth rinse formulas have a high alcohol content, which is bad!

Alcohol tends to dry the mouth, and this can be a real bad breath trigger. Alcohol is not an effective bad breath remedy.
