There was a rigid community structure and there were kapu or taboos which guided the commoners through almost each side of their lives.

The chiefs were sometimes warring with their neighbors and it had become the rule. This mode of life continued until the late eighteenth century. In 1791 the large island of Hawaii was united under a single king. This was the most radical change in the history of Hawaii so far. Kahala went on to unite the full of the Hawaiian islands by 1810.

After the death of Kahala his son took over and he removed the practice of Taboos that made way for the new spiritual beliefs which were being presented by the Christian missionaries.

The missionaries had began to arrive soon after Captain Cook had arrived on the Hawaiian islands and had opened them up to the Europeans & the Americans.

The missionaries introduced not just a new religious conviction, but in addition a western medicine & thoughts. Over time the culture of Hawaii was changed and in 1840 the monarchy further lost control when Hawaii ceased to be an absolute monarchy and administration branches were formed.

When there was a government in place the financial system became increasingly more dependent on Western business and the logical step was to become a territory of the USA. This was accomplished in 1898, however, full statehood was not accomplished until 1959.

It just takes a brief history of Hawaii to under stand why their traditions have become so critical. This little group of islands got very close to losing their uniqueness, that now they hold on and celebrate their individuality.
